Moscow. September 11. INTERFAX – Requiem service for the innocent victims at the hands of terrorists was held in Moscow on Tuesday, 17-th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which killed about three thousand people.

Funeral service was held in English and Church Slavonic languages at the Moscow Church of St. Catherine the great Martyr Church representation of the Orthodox Church in America.

The memorial service was attended by U.S. Ambassador to Russia John huntsman and his wife, the Vatican Ambassador, Archbishop Celestino Migliore, as well as FR Michael Ryan, taking care of the Catholic community at the U.S. Embassy, and representatives of Canada.

“In the modern world, no space left, which would be threatened by the scourge of terrorism”, – is spoken in the message of Metropolitan of all America and Canada Tikhon, which was announced after the service.

Metropolitan Tikhon recalled that recently, marking the 14th anniversary of the murder of innocent children and adults in a school in Beslan, “we rediscovered that Russian and Americans have shared a common tragic experience of suffering that brings terrorism”.

“But as Orthodox Christians we know that there is between us and a deeper spiritual connection – through the saving power of the cross and Resurrection of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ,” added the Primate.

In turn, the U.S. Ambassador stressed that the tragedy, which occurred 17 years ago in new York, shocked not only the United States but the whole world, and among the first who expressed his condolences to the people of America, were the leaders of the Russian state.

Reminded everyone of the thousands of people in those days brought flowers and cards to the Embassy in Moscow, the diplomat stressed that the tragic events of 2001 and subsequent years should serve as not only an occasion for grief, but to strengthen the unity of the world community in combating the threat of terrorism.
