In Kiev has recorded a West Nile

In Kiev confirmed case of West Nile fever in young men who had a rest in Crete. This was reported by a leading infectious diseases of Ukraine, honored doctor of Ukraine, Professor Olga Golubovska, writes UKRINFORM on Tuesday, September 11.

According to her, in the Alexander hospital was hospitalized a young man with meningitis. The patient, according to some characteristics of the disease, was suspected West Nile.

“Diagnosis “meningeal form of West Nile fever” is confirmed officially. Today, the patient is stable, the dynamics is positive, but forecasts still early,” – said Golubovska.

She stressed that West Nile is a disease that is now an incredible activity in Europe.

“In the EU since the beginning of 2018 recorded 710 cases. The most severely affected countries such as Serbia, Italy, Greece, Hungary and Romania. The situation is so serious that the planned discussion on the 68th session of the who regional Committee, held in Rome on 17-20 September,” – said Golubovska.

She stressed that 80% of people are asymptomatic.

“In 20% of patients develop flu-like illness, characterized by a sharp increase in body temperature, headache, sore throat, muscles, joints and back, weakness, nausea and diarrhea. The most dangerous in terms of prognosis are Central nervous system (meningitis, encephalitis), mortality among patients who develop neuroinvasive form of disease that ranges from 4% to 14%,” said Professor Golubovsky.

Earlier it was reported that from may to September 2018 in Romania recorded 166 cases of meningitis and meningoencephalitis, caused by West Nile virus. Of these, 17 people died.

It was also reported about the meningitis outbreak in the village of Powder in Transcarpathia. There ill 11 children.
