KSI and Logan Paul, YouTube stars with 37 million subscribers between them, will take their beef in the boxing ring on Saturday for a battle, recognized as “the greatest event in the history of the internet”.
KSI or Logan Paul?
YouTube fans around the world have chosen which side they are, and will be on the lookout when the pair of social-media heavyweights step into the ring at the Manchester Arena.
Both are very popular, the two are overwhelmingly the division, the two have a very controversial past.Who are KSI and Logan Paul?
KSI is the brash 25-year-old British gamer, comedy, vlogger and rapper whose videos have racked up $ 4.4 billion views in spite of strong criticism for obscene comments against women in some of his clips.
Logan Paul is a 23-year-old US comic actor (and former state wrestler) who made his name on the Vineyard before moving on to YouTube, where it has $ 3.9 billion of views, and that has caused outrage at the beginning of this year to show the body of an apparent suicide of the victim in Japan.
The two have cultivated a fanatical online feud in order to hype this fight, which will be broadcast on pay-per-view on YouTube.
Their brothers Jake Paul ($4.9 billion views) and Deji (3.3 billion) will fight on the undercard. A chance for redemption? This KSI and Logan say
The two seem to have largely shrugged their controversies, but the fight will be seen by some as a way of support and money into their career.
Interviewed by BBC News that he hopes to redeem himself, Logan said: “I do not think that this is the redemption. I think he can score a part, but in any case it is the fight of redemption for my mistake that occurred in January.
“But I think that it is an opportunity to show the world a new version of the Logan Paul”.
KSI, when asked if he has regrets about his past behavior, tells BBC News: “I definitely have regrets for some things I’ve said and done, but you know, I’m a human being and human beings make mistakes.
“Because it is me, it is presented everywhere on the internet, but that is just how it is.”What the fans say
Social media can be a combative place, then perhaps it is logical social superstars to take their hostility to a in the real world.
One of KSI training sessions in Manchester before the fight, fan Shaf Miah, 25, from London, said that the white-collar lover of fighting is “the next level of the internet beef”.
He said: “If you read the comments [on YouTube], people want to physically hit someone, if they don’t like them or if they have done something embarrassing. And to see their favorite YouTuber to do it for them, they are obviously to pay money to watch it.”
Michael Zepeda, 21 years old, came out of the fight. “They have both got a large number of subscribers, they both get a lot of points of view,” he said. “Everyone wants to watch.
“I want to see Logan get his ass beat. He deserves it. He has done many messed up things for views. He has crossed this line, certainly.”
CJ Melia, age 21, has travelled to Manchester from Dublin. “I can’t wait,” he said. “I’m so happy for this. I’ve been watching KSI for about nine years. It is the reason why I started my first YouTube channel eight years ago.
“I never thought that something like this would happen. It is the biggest event YouTube has ever done.”What the pros say
How the fight came on
It all started when two other YouTubers – Joe Weller and Malfoy – entered the ring last year, and KSI said he would fight the winner.
KSI has taken Weller at the Copper Box Arena in London in February, and won. That was streamed live on YouTube for free, with 1.8 million people watching live and 36 million more watching on the pair of channels from that.
Weller has five million subscribers to Logan Paul for $ 18 million. Saturday’s fight will be much bigger – but this time, the punters have to pay £7.50 to watch. The greatest event in the history of the internet?
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge might have something to say about that. Their 2011 wedding holds the Guinness World Record for the most live of a single event, to $ 72 million – well that obviously was not a product in the online world, as this fight is.
YouTuber Jordan Antle, who goes by the name of TheFearRaiser, said the fight of billing is not on the top. “This is a huge event and I would not hesitate to say that this is going to be one of the largest of the internet events up to this point in the story,” he told the BBC News.
“To see two YouTubers who have a large base of fans fighting each other live in front of millions of people in unheard of. It is a very strange combination of both worlds and it is attracting a lot of attention because of how different it is.”
KSI and the Paul brothers were certainly doing their best to whip their fans into a frenzy.
Insult-filled videos and diss tracks have flown back and forth, and in a bad mood press conferences took place in Los Angeles and London.
And on Wednesday, Deji turned suddenly to the Pauls’ training room Manchester and ended up getting a slap from Jake.Is this for real?
The antics have all been more WWE than WBO. But KSI’s manager Liam Chivers insists on the fact that it is “100% real”.
He said: “People think that these guys are not professional boxers, it’s just a bit of fun, it is simply a fight fan.
“Without those two guys are in the absolute pedestal and that they have egos, they were enormously passionate about the public.
“This is the modern-day power of the fandom, this is the place where the pressure is, and these two guys have built their reputations and the public, however many years, and it is on the line.
“In Addition, the fact that they are promotional geniuses and that they have applied and have attacked each other so hard that they are really angry with each other. There is not a bit of fake beef about it.”How many people will watch?
More than 15,000 tickets have been sold for the Manchester Arena, but Chivers is reluctant to predict how many people you register to watch online.
“It’s really hard to know – this is the first time that this has ever been done,” he said. “If you have said a number of a few hundred thousand buys, I would say that this was not good but that would cover the costs.”
The fight will cost £7.50 to watch it in the UK or $10 in the united states, much less than a great professional pay-per-view fight, but a lot more than people are accustomed to paying on YouTube.
“There is a YouTube of the culture not to buy, and it is a whole educational process to see how many tune,” Chivers said.
High-profile real-life competition is nothing new for the YouTubers, Zoella on The Great Comic Relief Bake-Off in 2015, and his brother Joe Show in this year’s strictly Come Dancing, the other British examples were more calm.
So, with their draw to the attention of the aggression, KSI and Logan Paul have stumbled across an effective way to boost their profiles and bank balances, and other YouTubers could follow.
Regardless of who will win the bragging rights in Manchester, and victor will brag a lot – the pair have already agreed on a recovery in the united states. This beef has just started.
