Erdogan asked BRICS to accept Turkey into the organization

MOSCOW, 29 Jul — RIA Novosti. Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in South Africa called on the participants block to allow Turkey to become a member of the Association.

“I said if you accept our Alliance, the block will be called BRIXT,” said Erdogan to the journalists.

According to him, the members of the group “warmly welcomed” the proposal.

“We the five countries included in the G20, I wish they had taken the necessary steps to receive us, and we took its place in the BRICS”, — said Erdogan.

Now the BRICS consists of five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The first summit (without South Africa, which joined the group in 2011) took place in June 2009.
“With kondachka not solved”

This week Vladimir Putin said that expanding the number of group members is not planned. The Russian leader did not rule out the possible entry of new countries in the Union.

According to him, the candidates for accession to the BRICS expressed their desire, but the leaders of the member countries treat this issue carefully. According to the Russian leader, the issue of accession of new members requires “further study”.

“The formats that have developed, show its effectiveness,” — said Putin.

The head of state stressed that this does not mean that the organization is closed.

“Just this question, as we people say, with kondachka not solved, you need to work”, — he said.
Areas of work

During a press conference following the summit the Russian leader also listed the main directions of work of the BRICS: the struggle against terrorism and coordination of the participating countries in political and economic spheres.

According to Putin, the main themes of the anniversary summit is opposition to unilateral approaches in world politics, multilateralism, and the use of the advantages of the fourth digital industrial revolution.

The President also noted the progress the organization has made since its creation. According to him, together with the expansion of membership, the Association began to acquire the features of the organization and the common interests become more wide.
