Patriarch Kirill called upon the UN Secretary General to facilitate the return of Christians in the Middle East

Moscow. June 20. INTERFAX – Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill has drawn the attention of the UN Secretary General, antónio Guterres, to the problem of the situation of Christians in the middle East.

“A large number of Christians left Syria, many people are leaving from Lebanon, and, of course, I think it is very important to Christians back in Syria, and in Iraq, and in Lebanon, where they have historically lived”, – the Patriarch said on Wednesday at a meeting with A. Guterres in Moscow.

The Primate of the Russian Church expressed the hope that an understanding of the importance of this problem from its counterpart, given that a significant part of the life of A. Guterres has been devoted to the topic of refugees.

In turn, the UN Secretary General acknowledged that, regardless of relationship to the regimes that existed until recently in the Middle East, and an existing current in Syria, “these modes protected religious minorities”.

“I have said many times, that while, as in my country, we worship rivers, trees and the moon, in Mosul, and Aleppo, people have studied, comes from the Holy Spirit,” – said the UN Secretary General, expressing his deep conviction that after the stabilization of the situation in Iraq and Syria will need to ensure the return of the Christians.
