500bhp TVR Griffith was shown at the London motor show

TVR will unveil its new Griffith sports car at the London motor show (May 17-20, in ExCeL) in a limited-run Launch Edition form, for which prices start at £90,000.

This will be the car’s first public appearance in the year 2018 and precedes the production of the first customer cars, that are due on the roads in the year 2019. Only 500 examples of the Launch Edition of the production.

The Griffith, a rival to the Porsche 911, was revealed for the first time at the Goodwood Revival last year. It is a two-seater built on a new platform that uses Gordon Murray iStream architecture. Its striking design is inspired by the original TVR Griffith and Tuscan , but adopts the most advanced aerodynamics to improve performance.

David Seesing, a designer of TVR that “works” between the company and Gordon Murray Design, it considers that the maintenance of the relationship with the brand, the history of decisions of the older cars as one of their most important priorities.

TVR Griffith: revisting an all-time classic British sports car

The iStream functions of interior structure of the panels of carbonfibre bonded into a steel frame to provide great rigidity and the impressive accident of integrity. The bodywork is also made from carbonfibre, helping to keep the Griffith weight down to 1250kg. The car is said to have a perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

Under the hood is a highly strung version of Ford’s 5.0-litre quad-cam V8 Mustang engine, fettled by Cosworth to produce 500bhp. This has ensured that TVR’s previously announced target of a 400bhp per ton of output has been met, and allows a sub-4sec 0-62 mph time and top speed of over 200 mph. The unit is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec Magnum XL six-speed manual gearbox.

The Griffith is the second front-engine production car to have a flat floor, that TVR claims it generates genuine ground effect aerodynamics to improve high-speed stability. The car is 4314mm long, 1850mm wide and 1239mm height, making it the most compact car in a class. The 911, for example, is 185 mm longer, 42 mm wider and 55 mm taller.

The Griffith has been created with driving pleasure as the priority on the last lap time, with TVR stating that they used the “smart engineering on electronic aids”. The car is in double-wishbone suspension with adjustment of systems shock absorbers in the front and rear.

Power steering is electrically assisted and the braking is handled by six-piston aluminum calipers and two-piece 370-mm ventilated floating discs at the front and four-piston calipers with 350 mm ventilated discs at the rear. The wheels are 19in in diameter and 235 mm wide in the front, 20 inches in diameter and 235 mm wide in the back.

Each one of the first 500 Launch Edition models can be reserved with a £5000 deposit. These first few cars are painted in the extent of colors and get their own version of the car of the system of information and entertainment.

Although the prices for the Launch Edition starts at £90,000, the real figure is expected to vary substantially depending on trim and equipment. TVR heads have affirmed their intention to keep the company “a lot of bang for your buck” mentality, as it did under previous leaders.

The Griffith will be the first car to go to TVR’s current owners, a private millionaires’ consortium led by computer-games tycoon Les Edgar, who four years ago hosted a successful bid to buy the brand of Russian ‘mini-oligarch’ Nikolai Smolensky.

Their company has brought back one of the uk’s most famous performance sports car brands, who was born 72 years ago in Blackpool 70 and ceased production in August 2006, under Smolensky, who had resisted all the attempts of revival until the current owners began a long process of restoration in 2013.

The TVR of the company will have a new design of the factory which is claimed to provide new levels of compactness and efficiency, and is constructed to deliver iStream models. With the Welsh government for financial support, TVR has put around £30 million on re-equipping existing 184,000 square feet of the factory at the Rassau Industrial Estate, Ebbw Vale, near the site of the proposed Circuit of Wales.

Edgar has told Autocar that his company plans will not be affected by the uncertainty that surrounds the Circuit of Wales project. TVR is expected to generate up to 150 jobs, when production is in full swing.

Edgar said TVR is on track to take possession of the factory in the second quarter of this year. The company has not offered a precise calendar, more than that, but a convincing scenario is that the factory preparation will take three to six months, the pilot production should begin before the end of the year and the first production cars should be on their way to early customers in the first quarter of 2019.

The production goal is to make and sell “most” of the 500 launch edition cars in the year 2019, after which annual production will grow to around 1000 cars.

The debut of a second model, probably a convertible, and the later higher-performance, lightweight models, they reveal a potential annual production of around 2000 to 2200 cars “for about a year five”. That number perfectly matches the current European Small Series type approval regulations for two cars.

TVR are concentrated in the first place in sales in the uk market, doing new car business from its Ebbw Vale factory in the early years, although it also aims to involve the “heritage service centres” (that is to say, existing independent TVR specialists) in their new business vehicles. There is already the signature of distributors in Europe, too, but US sales are not on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

In the first place, the priority will be to keep faith with the original “TVR 500′, whose money of the company have been carrying out for more than two years by the time the first cars are delivered. Last year, Edgar and his colleagues moved to keep the group involved by the staging of a series of weekend “meet the team” meetings, in which a full-size Griffith model was displayed and new detail was revealed.

“We’ve lost about half a dozen people at those events,” said Edgar, “but we have won 18 or 20. It was amazing to see first-hand how much they care.”

As the best of the British compare

The new TVR, with its front/mid-mounted, normally-aspirated V8, could not be more different from the other newly arrived British GT, the mid-engined turbo McLaren 570S, however, the two promise of performance very similar – a power-to-weight ratio of around 400bhp per tonne and a result, impressive 0-100 mph time of around 6.4 sec. How the new TVR broke the cover

The Coach was the first, on June 12, 2013, to break the story of TVR from the old established name, and check the values had been rescued by a group of millionaires enthusiasts who had bought the name of the company and the remaining assets of its former owner, Smolenski.

First details of the car of the partners, build emerged from a secret Coach briefing, fifteen days later and, as a result of the June 26 cover story, which also included the first interview with the new company’s boss, Edgar.

In April 2014, we were talking about a new R & D center in the south of England, but the real meat of the story, born on the 3 of June of 2015, when it revealed the new TVR would be shaped and designed by Gordon Murray Design (GMD) and powered by a Cosworth-modified Ford Mustang V8.

After that, the details came to light little by little. In July 2015, we knew that the company had started to take deposits for their first 500 cars. October 7, we visited Cosworth in Northamptonshire to see TVR of heads of start of the first Cosworth-modded Ford V8 on the dyno. In January of 2016, we knew that the chassis would make use of the GMD’s iStream Carbon process. In March of 2016, we learned that TVR’s new factory would be in the country of Wales.

The most recent big story was the TVR of the weekend series of meetings for the potential buyers in GMD in March of last year, where a clay model was shown for the first time. It justifies another TVR cover of the March 22, 2017, and that contained in the first of the new TVR plan.
