Kiev. April 17. INTERFAX – the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that he intends to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with an appeal to grant the right of the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
“I am the President decided to appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch His Holiness (Bartholomew – if) with a request to grant Thomas (right) of the Ukrainian independent, more local, Autocephalous Church”, – said P. Poroshenko on Tuesday, during a meeting with leaders of factions of the Verkhovna Rada.
The President urged Parliament promptly to support his initiative. “I would ask you, colleagues, because there are things that definitely bring us all together to the Parliament (because the President is the representative of the Ukrainian people and the Parliament is the representative of the Ukrainian people), to the Parliament supported this appeal and made it as soon as possible”, – said P. Poroshenko.
According to him, if the corresponding decision of the Verkhovna Rada, the President and the Church hierarchy, the call will be transferred to the Ecumenical Patriarch.
“In order for it to be in the near future, the Cathedral, the Synod considered and decided. I hope that this decision can be made to (celebration – if) 1030-anniversary of the baptism of Ukraine-Rus” – said P. Poroshenko.
He promised that after creating a single local Ukrainian Church, the faithful will have the freedom of belief and the right freely to choose a Church and Church jurisdiction.
“A United Orthodox local Church not become a state, and the separation of Church and state will continue to exist. All believers have and will have the right to freely choose a specific Church and ecclesiastical jurisdiction,” – said P. Poroshenko.
16 June 2016, the Verkhovna Rada adopted an appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew with an appeal to issue an edict regarding the autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine. Rada called on Patriarch Bartholomew to abolish the act of 1686, according to which the Kievan Metropolia was annexed to the Moscow Patriarchate.
“Ukrainian Parliament calls upon the Ecumenical Patriarch to take an active part in overcoming the consequences of division in the Church by convening, under the auspices of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the Ukrainian unification Council, which would decide all disputes and unite Ukrainian Orthodoxy”, – said in the appeal.
On 22 June, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada A. paruby said that Patriarch Bartholomew had received a letter of the Ukrainian Parliament.
The celebration 1030-anniversary of the baptism of Kievan Rus – Ukraine will be celebrated in 2018. The day of baptism of Kyivan Rus – Ukraine is celebrated on July 28.
