Mercedes-Maybach is preparing to expand its line-up over the S-class with a plush range-topping version of the upcoming third-generation GLS (formerly the GL) and there will be a preview of the ultra-luxury 4×4 with a concept later this month.
Maybach will develop as an important brand for Mercedes, given the rising demand for luxury models, especially in the SUV sector, with rivals such as Bentley and Land Rover under remarkable success with their respective Bentayga and the Range Rover.
Mercedes has also seen strong growth from the AMG performance arm, which reaches 131,970 sales in 2017, and it would like to emulate that success with the Maybach on a smaller, but profitable scale
The SUV was reported to be set is on the cards from Autocar in the year of 2016, to its debut as a lightweight concept car concealed at the Beijing motor show in April. A new preview video (below) shows some of the concept, the extravagant design features.
The Maybach GLS will be revealed in production guise at the Los Angeles motor show in November. The car tipped a price of about £120,000, if the sales begin in the year 2019.
The new Mercedes-Maybach GLS builds on initiatives with the two-year-old Mercedes-Maybach S-class (below).
The new Maybach SUV will share the same basic aluminum-steel body shell and advanced four-wheel – drive-basics as a less specified versions of the new GLS. However, Autocar has said that its fine positioning is underlined by a number of subtle exterior design tweaks, and much more luxury in the interior as the standard versions of the U.S. built SUV.
Insiders in the development of the Mercedes-Maybach concept car, known internally as the Maybach 9, saying it will not seek only to preview the appearance of the new model, with a bold new radiator grille between the elements will be offered to you with a little more exclusivity, but also on the type of exclusive features, including the Autonomous driving capabilities, on the production version of the SUV.
A high-level official told Autocar: “We were quietly surprised by the sales success of the Mercedes-Maybach S-class, which is proving to be extremely popular in many major markets. The plan now is the extension of the exclusivity around the Maybach is the segment name in the upper end of the SUV. We are convinced that this new model is little leave much to be desired in terms of luxury.”
The basis for the new GLS, the Mercedes-Benz MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform. A further development of the existing MRA platform, it is intended for the support of a number of new models, including the new GLE and GLE coupe.
It offers a significant reduction of the empty weight, to support the ability to create a 48-volt electrical architecture, and the latest radar, camera and sensor-supported control functions.
The Maybach Emblem GLS is likely to be offered solely with the Mercedes-AMG M177 V8 petrol engine. In the recently S560, this twin-turbo 4.0-Liter V8 462bhp, the device produces the opportunity, called up new model, GLS-560 for the production.
The new engine, to a cylinder-shutdown feature for additional fuel savings in the city, is the twin-turbo 4.7-litre V8 to replace used today by GLS 500.
Also in the discussion for the new Mercedes-Maybach model, the plug is revealed-in-gasoline-electric-drive recently in the S560e. Mercedes combined on a new turbocharger and electronically-charged, 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine developing 362bhp, with a 121bhp electric motor. In the new GLS, it is claimed, the use of a lithium-ion battery for a pure electric range of 31 miles.
With the GLS factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, produced exclusively in Mercedes -, the luxury SUV will be the first Maybach model will be produced in the United States.
As well as the competition on the Roque Bentayga, the Maybach GLS was also designed so that you have a rival to the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Range Rover SVAutobiography.
Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Maybach is introducing an updated version of the S560 plans at the Geneva auto salon in March. Under the planned changes in the sedan, a redesigned radiator grille, which set the tone for all future Maybach-badged models.
What needs to hit the Maybach GLS:
Bentley got there first with his Bentayga, which is an important lifeline for the brand. A 4.0-Liter V8 diesel has gone down also, in addition to the W12, and a hybrid is coming this year.
The Cullinan (whose name is not yet complete) comes in this year. Rolls’ first four-wheel-drive shares its architecture and 6.75-Liter V12 with the new Phantom.
The 641bhp Urus, the doubling on the roads in the spring, expected, Lamborghini sales to 7000. The company insists it is a high-performance car and reaches 0-62mph in 3.6 sec.
