“Gimme back my money”: How the world remembered the founder of the financial pyramid “MMM” Sergei Mavrodi

In Moscow at the 63rd year of life has died the founder of the largest in the former Soviet Union a financial pyramid “MMM” Sergey Mavrodi.

His death was sudden. The night before, a man complained to a passerby at a bus stop on the weakness and pain in the heart, he called the ambulance. However, to save the life of Mavrodi doctors failed — this morning he died at the Botkin hospital.

The preliminary cause of death is heart attack.

A mathematician with a phenomenal memory

Sergey Mavrodi was born on 11 Aug 1955 in Moscow in the family of the installer Panteley Andreyevich Mavrodi and economist Valentina Fedorovna.

In childhood he was diagnosed with congenital bilateral defect of the heart. The doctors predicted that he would not live to 18. However, their predictions were incorrect.

According to Mavrodi, from an early age he had a phenomenal memory and had a penchant for mathematical Sciences, so my life decided to connect with this field of knowledge.

So, after finishing school in 1972 he tried to enter the Moscow Institute of physics and technology, but not passed the entrance exams and was forced to change plans by submitting documents to the Moscow state Institute of electronics and mathematics faculty “Applied mathematics” (Department of artificial intelligence).

As a student, in addition to poker and chess, he was interested in entrepreneurship — Mavrodi has a knack to make copies of audio and video materials, and then built on this kind of business, selling to their peers.

After graduating from the Institute of electronics and mathematics, he went to work in the closed Scientific research Institute where he protrudes about two years.

In the late 80s, was first detained for a period of 10 days obkhss officers “for private sector activities” (sale of illegal products videos). However, the offense is not severely punished: while it was a question about opening of criminal case, issued a decree of the CPSU Central Committee “On the kinks”, and Mavrodi was released.

The financial pyramid “MMM”

In 1989, together with his brother and brother’s wife Mavrodi founded the cooperative “MMM”, which created several dozen commercial structures, including JSC “MMM”, which became the largest in the history of Russia a financial pyramid from which he suffered, according to various estimates, from 10 to 15 million people.

In the early 90-ies, when the market began to receive shares of “MMM”, in just six months, the value of each security has increased 127 times. It was an unprecedented result of the profit is due, however, a huge amount of advertising.

In 1994 was followed by a second arrest Mavrodi — this time on charges of tax evasion of income led by the company “invest-Consulting”.

It is interesting that he repented and regretted only that all has not finished.

While in prison, Mavrodi organized the collection of signatures for registration as a candidate in deputies of the state Duma of the Russian Federation, and two months later was registered by the Central Election Commission.

October 30, 1994, the Russians elected him Deputy of the state Duma, and Mavrodi was released from custody.

Almost three years after that, in September 1997, “MMM” was finally declared bankrupt.

Political activity

Political career Mavrodi was not particularly bright: as the Deputy of the state Duma he did absolutely nothing, because it does not present at any meeting since his election. But ordinary citizens still remembered. Primarily rhetoric and lack of fear of authorities.

In the early days of “political games” Mavrodi wrote an official letter of refusal from parliamentary salary and all parliamentary privileges: privileges, villas, office machines. He openly said he goes to the deputies solely for the sake of parliamentary immunity.

Then the conflict broke out with the Russian authorities, and Mavrodi officially, through the press, threatened them by referendum, putting the question of confidence. In particular, he promised to collect the required one million signatures for a no confidence in the government with 10 million investors a week. He was repeatedly invited to the Kremlin “for negotiations”, but Mavrodi has consistently ignored all such invitations.

A year later, on 6 October 1995, the state Duma early termination of its Deputy powers. In the same year he again stood for the Duma from the “Party of people’s capital”, but lost the election.

Then there were the elections of the President of the Russian Federation. Yes, the Central election Commission registered Mavrodi candidate in presidents of Russia, however, later rejected a significant portion of subscription lists in support of a candidate and his registration was refused.

Moreover, Mavrodi criminal case was initiated on the forgery of signature sheets, which, however, was then closed “for lack of corpus delicti”. However, to participate in the elections he could not.

In fact, this was the end and the activities of the party “people’s capital”, which put forward Mavrodi for the presidency, but it was officially closed only in 2011.

Bedding to the bottom and arrest

After Mavrodi was stripped of his parliamentary mandate, his case of tax evasion was not only renewed — added to his new article on fraud. So, at the end of 1997 it was announced first in Russian, and a year on the international wanted list.

More than five years Mavrodi managed to escape, nothing about him was known until the winter of 2003.

It was rumored that he had lived a long time in Scandinavia or Greece, but in fact Mavrodi never left Moscow and never leave the limits of Russia. As it later turned out, he lived locked up in a rented apartment in Moscow.

The confessions Mavrodi, 8 years hiding from the investigation he was helped by a private security service, “the same level as the one that I was looking for”, that is composed of former intelligence officers, high-class specialists.

In April 2007, Mavrodi was sentenced for the above offences to four years and six months of imprisonment with punishment serving in a colony of General regime, but virtually the entire period of his sentence the founder of the “MMM” has already served in prison “Matrosskaya Tishina” (special block, FROM 99/1).

“MMM”-like and activity in Ukraine

In 2011, Mavrodi organized for residents of Russia and CIS countries a new financial pyramid, which he called “MMM-2011”. Through the years he transformed it into a “MMM-2012”. But eventually the pyramid collapsed.

In 2014, Mavrodi founded another project — “MMM-Global”, aimed at African countries. At the same time the building of the pyramid began in Asia — Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Philippines, Japan, Thailand, including the billions in India and China. Then “MMM” appeared in the United States, Israel, Italy and France.

In the spring of 2016 Mavrodi has officially announced the closure of all its projects.

In parallel, he also tried to return to politics, but this time on the territory of Ukraine. In 2012, he announced the founding of the party “MMM” (“Mi Maєmo Meta”), and mass reception in political force.

Later this party was nominated as a candidate at elections to the Verkhovna Rada in constituency 94, Kyiv oblast Denis Pushilin, who is considered one of the leaders of the militants in the Donbas.

Some media immediately reported that “MMM” is recruiting mercenaries, sends to the East of Ukraine and even Finance their activities. Talked about this in the SBU, in particular, its then head Valentyn Nalyvaychenko.

On the eve of the next elections for President of Russia in 2018, Mavrodi stated that it also intends to participate in them. “I will run. No doubt! I want to help my homeland, and I know how to do it. So, this is my direct civic duty,” he told reporters.

Mavrodi in mental hospitals, literature, and movie

It should be noted, according to psychiatrists, only in Moscow and oblast in mid-2000, registered in the hospitals were almost four hundred “Sergeev Mavrodi” — much more “doubles” than anyone. For example, the “Yeltsin” was at that time only about fifty.

In addition, Mavrodi was famous literary work. While in prison, he wrote the novel “Son of Lucifer”. Now it is published in author’s edition (unaltered editions).

The novel consists of separate stories. Every day is a new hero, new story, new human destiny.

All written about 150 short stories. Most of them never before published, some before that were published in the book “Temptation” (2008) and “Temptation 2” (2012).

In addition, he has written a lot of poems, there are also plays and scripts. For example, in 2011, a wide, rolling out the film “Pirammmida”, loosely based on the novel by Mavrodi (the distributor of the film company Universal Pictures International.) The role of Sergei Mavrodi (in the film, he Sergey Mamontov) played by Alexey Serebryakov.

In the summer of 2012 the scenario Mavrodi began shooting the film “the River”. The film premiered in the framework of the third Russian international horror film award “Drop” in 2014. The film was awarded a special award for “national contributions to the development of the genre.” However, in wide release, the film aired for unknown reasons.

In 1993-2005, he was married to a native of Ukraine Elena Pavlyuchenko, the possessor of many titles of various beauty contests (“Miss Kiev” – 92, “Miss MMM” – 94, etc.).
