The Iranian foreign Minister thanked Russia for “saving the reputation of the UN security Council”

MOSCOW, 5 Mar — RIA Novosti. Russia saved the reputation of the UN Security Council, vetoed a draft resolution on Yemen, said Minister of foreign Affairs of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif in an interview with the newspaper “Etemad”.

“The Security Council should be grateful to Russia for what it did not allow the reputation of this Council repeatedly has been threatened,” said Zarif.

“Being grateful to Russia, we at the same time feel that Russia as a permanent member of the UN security Council its veto prevented the adoption of the resolution, which in the future will be perceived as a resolution that protects the aggressor,” — said the foreign Minister of Iran.

Last week on a vote of the UN security Council had issued two draft resolutions in connection with the expiration of the sanctions regime in Yemen. The British draft resolution for the year renewed the sanctions regime for Yemen, and the mandate of the experts, who monitor compliance. The document also “expressed concern” that “weapons of Iranian origin” were imported to Yemen after the introduction of embargo on deliveries of weapons. Also, the project “seriously condemns the attacks of the Houthis of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ballistic missiles”.

Russia, which has security Council veto power, opposed the document. Also voted against Bolivia. China (permanent member of the security Council) and Kazakhstan abstained in the vote. Russia, in turn, proposed an alternative draft resolution to extend until 26 February 2019 current sanctions regime and the mandate of the Commission of experts for Yemen. The document was adopted by the UN security Council unanimously.
