Volvo XC40 wins Car of the Year award

Volvo XC40 has been appointed to the 2018 winner of the prestigious European Car of the Year Award.

The small SUV has taken a stunning victory in the voting for the award, The result has been announced on the eve of this year’s edition of the Geneva motor show. The XC40 received 325 votes, putting him well ahead of the runner-up Seat Ibiza (242 votes). The BMW 5-Series was third, with 226 votes.

The XC40 victory marks the first time that a Volvo has won the award. Company boss HÃ¥kan Samuelsson said: “This is the right car to win. I’m glad that we got votes from each of the countries that took part in the jury: it shows this car is really a success.

“This car represents the future of Volvo. With a new platform developed with [the parent company] Geely, go into new markets.”

The XC40 is no stranger to trophies, having also won the 2018 Car? Car of the Year award.

The Car of the Year award, is managed by seven European automotive publications, including Autocar. The award is voted on by a jury composed of 60 journalists from 23 countries, including Autocar’s Matt Prior and Andrew Frankel.

The award was established in 1964, Rover 2000, claiming the victory in the inaugural. The other finalists for the award this year were the Alfa Romeo Stelvio pass, Audi A8, bmw, Citroën C3 Aircross and the Kia Stinger.
