Antonia Tatchell, 43, was discovered at a house on Albert St in Brunswick after police were called to the scene on Thursday morning.
A neighbor said he often heard “screaming” on the house, the Herald Sun reports.
“We’re comfortable at this stage that everything that has happened do not pose any threat to the community in general,” Detective senior Sergeant Mark Colbert told reporters at the scene.
“We are talking with the neighbors, and doorknocking the area, doing a lot of questions to try to determine what actually can be if nothing has happened.”
The police are trying to his death as suspicious and are awaiting results of a post mortem.
Ms Tatchell was a finalist for the prestigious art prize in 2011.
