The UN Secretary General estimated the average duration of conflicts in the world

UN, 21 Dec — RIA Novosti. The average duration of conflicts in the world today reaches 20 years, said UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres.

“The number of armed conflicts on a global scale has decreased, but in the middle East and in parts of Africa there were new. Conflicts become more intractable. They last longer — an average of more than 20 years,” said Guterres, speaking at a meeting of the UN security Council on the issue of challenges to international peace and security.

The head of the world body noted that the settlement of conflict situations is compounded by the fact that armed groups “are competing for control over governments, natural resources and territory, and being the extremist groups with the absolutist requirements, they leave no room for democracy.”

“Conflict prevention should be at the head of all our work. It is better to prevent than to try to resolve it,” asked the Secretary General to the security Council members.
