Anna Friel celebrates Emmy win

22 years since Anna Friel has won his last big awards – a National TV Award and a TV Times Award for her role in the defunct Channel 4 soap Brookside.

Now his recent career resurgence, has been crowned with another trophy for best actress at the International Emmy Awards for the ITV drama Marcella.

The 41-year-old was among the UK winners at the New York ceremony.

Sir Kenneth Branagh won best actor for Wallander, while Alan Partridge is Scissored Island has been named as the best comedy.

BBC Two the Exodus: Our Journey to Europe, which gave the cameras to the migrants, has won best documentary.

The International Emmy awards are in honor of TV made outside of the USA.

Friel has triumphed for the reproduction of Marcella Backland, the former detective who returns to the police force to help solve an old case of a serial killer, while also trying to save his marriage.

Written from Sweden by Hans Rosenfeld, was billed by ITV as “noir Scandinavian on the streets of Britain”. It was shown on ITV last year and is on Netflix around the world.

Despite its performance, is recognized by the global system of TV professionals who vote for the International Emmy awards, was not nominated by the British electorate for this year’s Bafta TV Awards.

The filming of the second series of Marcella has just been completed and will be screened at the beginning of 2018.

As well as Marcella, Friel recently, he starred alongside Sean Bean in Jimmy McGovern, ruthless Broken on BBC One and is due to appear on ITV again of a Butterfly, as the mother of a boy who identifies as a girl.

In the meantime, Sir Kenneth Branagh International Emmy win for another British take on Scandi noir – in the BBC’s adaptation of Henning Mankell has Wallander novels.

And the comedian Steve Coogan took the saturn award for Alan Partridge is Scissored the Island, which was shown on Sky Atlantic in the UNITED kingdom.

On Monday, the ceremony was due to include a special award for Kevin Spacey, but that was withdrawn in light of the recent allegations of sexual misconduct against him.
