Icons old and new rites, seized from smugglers, will pass to the Russian Museum

Saint-Petersburg. 9 Nov. INTERFAX – IN the Mikhailovsky Palace on Thursday will be handed over to the Russian Museum from FSB of Russia across Petersburg and Leningrad region party icons seized from smugglers.

As the press service of the Museum, the icons were seized by the security personnel as a result of activities in combating the illicit movement of cultural goods through Russian customs.

Total of 13 icons – examples of paintings of the New time of the XVIII-XIX century, written in different art centers of Russia and related to the art of the “Synod” of the Orthodox Church and old believers to the letter. The ceremony will be attended by the head of Department of the Ministry of culture of the Russian Federation in the Northwest Federal district Sergey Bulavsky and acting Director of the Russian Museum Yuri Korolev.

The Museum noted that the most interesting and intact in painting is the image of the mother of God “the prayer for the people”, later called bogolyubskoy as enshrined in the naming on the icon itself.

With the art of Palekh, one of the leading icon-painting centres of the New time, associated with the icon belt of the Apostle John, presents in the moment of creation and the gospel with the figure of an angel, the wisdom of God, “whisper” of the Holy text of Scripture. In the hands of the Evangelist is not only half-opened book and pen, and other writing materials – ink-bottle and stand under the feathers.

Another icon with shoulder-length figure of St. Nicholas, who received the title, “Disgusting”, as she repeated the gate the image of the Saint, was also characteristic of the work of masters of the Vladimir icon painting villages, especially of Palekh artists.

Among other works – several different versions of the scene Theotokos icons of the virgin, Mary, the caves (with images of the upcoming Anthony and Theodosius of the caves), Burning Bush, and scenes of the holidays – chamber of the introduction of virgin into the temple, written in one of the old believers ‘ centers of the Volga, and of the Nativity of the virgin, probably executed in the lackey in the second half of the XIX century.

Three icons represent a typical type of selected saints that were ordered as domestic worship houses images. An image of Saint Blaise of Sebaste, in spite of the poor preservation, it is interesting as a rare example of the hagiography of the Saint, which spread from the XVII century, characterized by the fact that the scenes of the lives were placed in the fields, but directly in the center, at the feet of the miracle worker.

Each piece needs to be serious conservation activities: the restorers of the Russian Museum as soon as they drafted all the necessary documents, will commence the strengthening of soil and paint layer again transferred to a Museum of monuments of the late Russian iconography.
