Toksvig pays tribute to “beautiful” 15-to-1 host

The transmitter has paid Sandi Toksvig, as a tribute to the “beautiful” 15-to-1 Moderator William G Stewart, calling him a “consummate professional”.

The Bake Off host, added that it was listening to “sad news” of his death on Thursday.

Stewart, who was 84, was 15-to-1 host from 1988 to 2003, with Toksvig takeover in 2014.

Channel 4 was “saddened” by the news that the “broadcasting legend”, had “inimitable style”, the “15-to-1, apart from all the other quiz shows”.

“Our thoughts are added to it with his friends and family” of the transmitter.

Comedian Adam Hills, who hosted the celebrity-of-the-A series, the first already in the year 2013, raised a gentle smile with his tweet, saying: “Even if I three feet, I would have never filled in his shoes.”

Another long-standing Channel 4 quiz show Countdown, also paid tribute, calling Stewart “our C4 brother of the old”.

Stewart, died after a short illness, from 2,265 episodes, met almost 34,000 competitors and presents a minimum of 350,000 questions.

He originally wanted to present Jonathan Ross, 15 1, only the job, even if no one could appropriate be found.


The former Butlins redcoat, who began his TV career behind the camera, produced and directed a number of comedies, including father, Dear father, Bless This house and love Thy neighbour.

In the 1980s, he turned to game shows, working on such TV favorites as the Family Fortunes and The price is right.

He married his third wife, Laura Calland, the voice-over artist for 15-to-1, in the year 1997.
