Yakutsk. June 9. INTERFAX – Archbishop Yakut and Lensky Roman consecrated the temple Matrona of Moscow in the city of Verkhoyansk and the first divine Liturgy in it, told the correspondent of “Interfax-Religion” on Friday to the local diocese.
“Verkhoyansk, in the Northern city of Yakutia, is considered the pole of cold: in 1885, there was registered a temperature of -67 degrees Celsius. Today it is one of the smallest cities in Russia – Here live at least a thousand people,” – said the Agency interlocutor.
The city was founded in 1638 as a Cossack cabin. The founder of the city, the Yenisei Cossack Which Ivanov is a prominent researcher of the North: he discovered and described the river Indigirka, Kolyma, top Jan found Northern people – Yukaghir, founded several towns.
In 1793 in Verhojansk was built Annunciation Church, in the middle of the nineteenth century received the status of the Cathedral as the main Church of the Church district. It was assigned about five thousand members. After the establishment of Soviet power the Church life in the city stopped, the building was used as post offices, and in 1937 burned down.
The new Church was built on the initiative of local residents and was the most Northern Church in the name of St. Matrona of Moscow.
