Metropolitan Hilarion urged to expand the teaching of religion in schools for the prevention of terrorism

Moscow. May 31. INTERFAX – the Church favoured the extension of teaching of the course “Basics of religious cultures and secular ethics”.

“To ensure that our citizens know what is taught by traditional religion, in contrast to what the real Islam from terrorism under Islamic slogans, we have to. And this is a critical need to expand the teaching of religion in elementary, middle and high school,” said the head of the Synodal Department for external Church relations Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, speaking Wednesday at a plenary session of the Federation Council in the format of “Time expert”.

At the same time, he continued, the children need knowledge, not only in their own religious traditions, but in the religious traditions of their neighbors.

“Ignorance in religious matters is able to transform our young people into easy prey of extremist and terrorist organizations. Suffice it to recall the case of the Moscow student Barbara Karaulova,” – said the Hierarch.

As he said, religious education can also become a reliable barrier to the ideology of moral permissiveness, “when same-sex cohabitation legally equal to marriage between a man and a woman, when homosexual couples are allowed to adopt children who is moms and dads there is a “parent number one and parent number two”, when legalized euthanasia as a convenient way to get rid of “superfluous” people.”

In all secondary schools in Russia on 1 September 2012 was introduced the course “Basics of religious cultures and secular ethics”.

He studied for only 4 years at the rate of one hour per week and consists of six modules: “fundamentals of Orthodox culture”, “fundamentals of Islamic culture” “bases of Judaic culture” “Bases of Buddhist culture”, “basics of world religious cultures”, “fundamentals of secular ethics”. Students and their parents have the right to choose one of them.
