The opinion of Petersburgers on the transfer of Isaac the Church needs to consider, according to the presidential envoy in the northwestern Federal district

Saint-Petersburg. April 25. INTERFAX – the Plenipotentiary representative of RF President in the northwestern Federal district believe it is necessary to take into account the opinion of Petersburgers on the possible Saint Isaac’s Cathedral Russian Orthodox Church.

As reported “Interfax” in the press service of the Embassy on Tuesday, the position of the authority was formulated in response to the letter of the Union of creative workers of the State Museum-monument “St. Isaac’s Cathedral”.

“As noted in the letter, the staff of the Embassy are in favour of finding the most acceptable solution, taking into account the rights and legitimate interests of all participants, as well as the opinion of the population of St. Petersburg”, – said the Agency interlocutor.

“In the office of the Plenipotentiary representative of the President monitor this situation and emphasize that the cornerstone must be put to the strict observance of the current legislation, to ensure public order and socio-political stability in the city,” he added.

About the plans of the authorities of St. Petersburg to St. Isaac’s Cathedral transfer to the control of the Russian Orthodox Church became known in early 2017. The decision has caused a wide public resonance: in the city held several mass rallies against the transfer of the Cathedral. The Director of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Nikolai Burov, head of the Museum for 15 years, said the resignation on 1 June.
