The suspect in the shooting at the airport in Florida could face the death penalty

MOSCOW, 8 Jan — RIA Novosti. U.S. Federal prosecutors have formally charged a suspect in the shooting at the airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, he faces the death penalty, reports the associated Press.

The incident occurred on Friday at the front of the baggage claim at the airport in Fort Lauderdale. During the shooting killed five people, more than 40 were injured. Presumably, fire was opened by the Latino Esteban Santiago. He was arrested by the police. Later it turned out that Santiago is a veteran of the war in Iraq, had previously come to the attention of the security services and was sent for treatment problems of mental nature.

Prosecutors filed a Santiago charged with violent acts that led to death, and two charges of violating firearms laws.

If Santiago is found guilty of these crimes he can be sentenced to death, the Agency reports.

According to investigators, Santiago arrived at the airport and deliberately shot at people indiscriminately. Earlier investigators did not rule out that terrorism could be the motivation of the attack.
