The Primate of the UOC asks Poroshenko to protect the faithful in the country

KYIV, Nov 14 — RIA Novosti. The Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), Metropolitan Onufry appealed to the President Petro Poroshenko with a request to prevent the use of religion for political manipulation and to protect the faithful in the country.

Earlier the UOC-MP has repeatedly reported on cases of harassment of priests and seizures of Orthodox churches in Ukraine representatives of the schismatic “Kiev Patriarchate” and the armed nationalist groups. Also, according to Ukrainian churches, nearly 90 churches of the UOC-MP is destroyed or damaged in the fighting in the South-East of Ukraine.

“We ask you as the guarantor of the Constitution, to make the necessary efforts to halt attempts at the state level to use the issues of religion and religious choice of citizens of Ukraine in political manipulation and the settling of scores between political opponents… to Do your best to in our society every citizen, regardless of their religious beliefs, feel a sense of respect and protection by the state”, — reads the statement of Metropolitan on behalf of the Synod released on Monday on the website of the UOC-MP.

The report said that today in Ukraine were commonplace insults, threats and calls for discrimination against the millions of faithful of the UOC-MP, but the police never gave the desired legal assessment of such phenomena.

Ukraine currently operates the canonical UOC-MP, which is a self-governing Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, and unrecognized by the world Orthodox Church structures — the Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).
