MOSCOW, 22 Oct — RIA Novosti. At least 102 people were injured as a result of accidental mixing of the hypochlorous sodium and sulfuric acid at the company’s MGP Ingredients Inc., producing strong alcoholic beverages, according to the TV station KSHB.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Friday (16.00 GMT) at the plant in Atchison, Kansas. It was reported that the staff mistakenly mixed two chemicals in the wrong tank launched chemical reaction led to the formation of a gas cloud over the city. About 11 thousands of inhabitants were evacuated in connection with the distribution of poisonous fumes generated by a chemical reaction.
According to TV channel, 72 victims were residents of Atchison, another 30 live in the surrounding areas. They were all taken to local hospitals, where they received the necessary assistance.
Representatives of MGP Ingredients Inc. noted that they “work closely with local authorities to ensure that we will take appropriate retaliatory measures.”
It is reported that at the moment the air in the city is back to normal.
