According to the Patriarch, Sergius of Radonezh (1314-1392) entered in the national history “as a unifier of Russia, which predetermined the victory on the Kulikovo field, as someone who for many was the development of monastic life and, most importantly, to preserve and strengthen unity of the people.”

The Patriarchal divine service at the assumption Cathedral will start at 09:00, at the end the head of the Russian Church made a festive prayer service on the Cathedral square of the monastery. At the monastery at various times operated a men’s and women’s almshouses, hospitals, schools, hospice, the monks also helped in the maintenance of city eye hospital. In the courtyard of the Lavra refectory during the holidays daily fed lunch to 5 thousand pilgrims.

Sergius of Radonezh (1314-1392) was the founder of monasticism in Central and Northern Russia. Holy known, in particular, that blessed Prince Dmitry Donskoy in the Kulikov battle, which was the unification of Russian lands around Moscow and gave rise to the Russian statehood.
