The Nun Evphrosynia Of Suzdal

The eldest daughter of Prince Michael of Chernigov, martyred in the Horde, she, according to legend, in the childhood was engaged, but the groom in adolescence died suddenly, and young “grass widow” decided to stay in Suzdal, where he was visiting relatives in the convent in honour of the placing of the robe of the Theotokos at Blachernae, and there received the tonsure with the name Evphrosynia.

In the family home she received a serious education: I have read not only the Scripture, but Plato and Aristotle, Homer and Virgil, knew the writings of Aesculapius and Galen. And no wonder: her grandmother was a Polish Princess, daughter of king Casimir II and his grandfather Grand Duke of Kiev Vsevolod the Red (Red) — people not only noble, but also European educated. And long live childhood in Kiev, she had the opportunity to undergo training at the Kievo-Pechersk monks to use monastic library.

In the monastery she invited the abbess to divide abode into two parts — the widow and her maiden and married townswoman walked in “widow” Trinity Church, and the girls in the main monastery Church of Lord’s robe deposition. (On how important it is to virgins and women, married, lived in the monastery will be separated 600 years serafi says the monk of Sarov, the mastermind behind the creation in Diveevo Mill maiden community).

In the monastic tradition it was reported that noble and educated Princess-nun was responsible for training young girls, not only postriglas to the monastery, but also ordinary citizens who lived nearby and over time had the reputation in the area so academic that it began to come for knowledge from many different people. It is glorified not only the Euphrosyne, but also the monastery of the deposition.

When there beginning of the epidemic, to the abode of people stretched as in the hospital, Euphrosyne and sisters have been taught the basics of the medical art, drawn from the Latin books.

She knew about the death of his father and the destruction of Suzdal in 1238, the troops of Batu. But after receiving the news of the martyrdom and murder of Prince Michael, took on a multi-day post, and her whole life was a feat of complete renunciation and the strict fulfillment of monastic vows. People in life esteemed her a Saint.

Died the nun Euphrosyne between 1250 and 1255 and in 1698 was made in Church worship.

None of the ancient lives of the Saint women of Russia, there are so many references to the gracious help of God the Mother, as in the life of St. Euphrosyne of Suzdal. The image of her included in the Russian tradition as the embodiment of Russian women’s suffering: she endured the death of a fiancé, the death of his father and brother, the ruin of his native land, and all endured with patience, meekness and courage, without which couldn’t take people test have afflicted it for centuries. The example of St. Euphrosyne of Suzdal helped carry austraila life, transforming them in prayer and labor and finding joy in Union with God through the patience that is so highly valued in Russia.
