A former head of Britain’s intelligence service, MI6, has warned that the European Union will find itself “at the mercy of a popular uprising” if it fails to take control of the migration crisis. Sir Richard Dearlove said the EU’s response has been hesitant and unsure — and what he called a “massive European response” was probably the only answer to the problem. In a speech at the BBC, he said the EU’s decision to offer free visas to tens of millions of Turkish citizens, as part of a deal to reduce the number of migrants, was perverse — and akin to storing petrol next to a fire you were trying to put out.
