Boxer Igor Mikhalkin failed the test on Meldonium

European champion in Boxing for the EBU Igor Mikhalkin failed a doping test for Meldonium. About it reports the American portal World Boxing News.

According to the portal, the athlete has passed a positive doping test after 12 March defended the title in a duel with Frenchman Patrick Bois.

“It’s true, I recently took Meldonium”, — quotes the portal words mikhalkina. — Up until a few months ago that was resolved. I didn’t understand that this is not allowed, however, I stopped [taking the drug], but apparently, it often takes time for the drug was withdrawn from the body”.

At the same time, the athlete emphasized that “ignorance is no excuse”. “I made a mistake, I’m very sorry. I’m all for honest competition, and I never take any drugs without checking several times that everything was in order. I hope that the punishment will not be too harsh,” said Mikhalkin.

Now the fate of mikhalkina have to solve the European Boxing Union (EBU), in agreement with the French and German associations.

The doping scandal, members of which were Russian sportsmen started in the beginning of March. According to the world anti-doping Agency (WADA), with the beginning of the year to use banned as of 1 January of Meldonium, 123 were convicted athlete around the world. Among them is tennis player Maria Sharapova, swimmer Yuliya Efimova, the short-speed skater semen Elistratov, skater Paul Kulizhnikov, figure skater Ekaterina Bobrova and others.
