The first basic court of Belgrade ordered the Serbian authorities to pay compensation to next of kin 24 14 women and children who were killed in Kosovo near their homes in March 1999. This is stated in the message of the humanitarian law Center (HLC), which represents the interests of the relatives of the victims.
We are talking about the murder in the town of Podujevo, which was celebrated fighters of division “Scorpions” March 28, 1999. The process lasted nine years. The amount of compensation by $240 thousand is less than half the originally requested amount. This decision, according to human rights activists, “is a violation of the right to compensation for unlawful activities of state authorities, guaranteed by article 35 of the Serbian Constitution” and “violation of the right to a remedy for violations of fundamental human rights, guaranteed in article 13 of the European Convention on human rights”.
As noted in the HLC, this is the first time a court in Serbia shall decide on compensation for crimes committed by the authorities against the Albanian civilian population during the armed conflict in Kosovo.
In 1998, Kosovo has been engaged in ethnic conflict, which has escalated into armed clashes. It interfered with NATO. Aviation Alliance ousted from the region by the Serbian security forces. In 2008 Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. It was recognized by more than 110 countries, including 23 of the 28 member States of the EU.
In the Hague will set up a special court to try cases of crimes committed during and after the war in Kosovo. He is expected to begin in 2016. The court will be composed of international judges, but will create it according to the law of Kosovo. This means that in the Hague will be no international Tribunal, and court of Kosovo rendered outside the Republic.
