World military expenditures in 2015, almost $ 1.7 trillion, having risen by 1%. Such data are contained in the new report of the Stockholm international Institute of peace studies (SIPRI).
The report notes that this is the first increase in global military expenditure in 2011. The increase was primarily due to the countries of Asia and Oceania, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
Still, the leader in military spending by the end of 2015 are the USA, despite the fact that Washington has reduced its military spending by 2.4% to $ 596 billion (36% of world spending). In second place is China, whose expenses increased by 7.4 % to $215 billion (13% of total expenditure). The third spot is occupied by Saudi Arabia, its expenses have grown by 5.7% to $87,2 billion (5.2 per cent). From this place it has replaced Russia, which now occupies the fourth position, building up in 2015 its military spending by 7.5% to us $66,4 billion (4% of world expenditure).
The experts of the Institute noted that military expenditures of Russia in 2015 was actually lower than originally planned in the budget. This happened due to the fall in oil prices and economic sanctions, according to experts SIPRI.
Western Europe has reduced in 2015 its military spending by 1.3%. This is the lowest annual decline, which showed the countries of the region since 2010. Britain, France and Germany had previously stated that in the coming years will slightly increase military spending because of fears about Russia and threats from the “Islamic state” (organization banned in Russia), says the report.
“Military spending in 2015 has shown a contrasting trend,” — said the head of the SIPRI project on military expenditure Sam Peyreleau-Freeman. “On the one hand, patterns of expenditure reflect an escalation of the conflict and tension in many parts of the world. On the other hand, they show a clear weakening of the oil-fueled growth in military spending over the last decade. It’s volatile economic and political situation creates an uncertain picture for the next few years,” he added.
