The Nobel peace prize-2018 was awarded for action against sexual violence in war

The Nobel peace prize-2018 awarded to the gynecologist Denis Mukwege (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and human rights activist Nadia Murad (Iraq). Winners have made an effort to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon during armed conflicts.

On Friday announced the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist, Chevalier of the Legion of honor. Best known as the founder and Director of the hospital Panzi, which provide medical assistance to women victims of gang rapes.

In 2008, Mukwege was awarded the UN prize for human rights. In 2014 from the leadership of the European Union received the Sakharov prize for the rehabilitation of women victims of sexual violence.

Nadia Murad was born in 1993, is actively engaged in human rights activities. Several times been awarded important prizes and awards. In particular, in 2016, received the Andrei Sakharov prize for freedom of thought and prize the václav Havel human rights.

In 2014 Nadia Murad was captured into slavery by fighters of the terrorist group “Islamic state”. The Iraqi region of Sinjar was liberated by Kurdish armed groups “Peshmerga” in the end of 2015.

In 2016, the former prisoner of ISIS became the Ambassador to protect the dignity of survivors of trafficking from the UN office on drugs and crime. Murad was the first man who survived slavery and was appointed to such position.
