Moscow. September 3. INTERFAX – Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill will visit the St. Petersburg diocese for a primatial visitation to the forty-year anniversary of the death of his spiritual mentor, Metropolitan Nikodim (Rotov), according to the local Archdiocese.
Metropolitan Nikodim died 5 Sep 1978, during an audience with Pope John Paul I, which the Bishop went, despite the fact that, according to eyewitnesses, looked very tired. According to official figures, he had a heart attack, instant cardiac arrest.
Metropolitan Nicodemus was a spiritual mentor and teacher of the Patriarch Cyril and of many other distinguished, now widely known bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church.
On 4 September, the Primate will visit the St. Petersburg theological Academy and will take part in the act, dedicated to the memorable date. “With the name of Metropolitan Nikodim is not only the revival of theological science and education in the Leningrad theological schools, but also saving the Academy from shutting down in the middle of the XX century”, – noted in the metropolis.
On the morning of 5 September Patriarch Kirill will lead a divine Liturgy and Requiem service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Lavra. After the service at the grave of Metropolitan Nikodim at St. Nicholas cemetery of the monastery Patriarch lity.
