The Catholic bishops asked Lukashenko deferment from military service for seminarians and priests

Minsk. May 23. INTERFAX – the Catholic bishops of Belarus appealed to President Alexander Lukashenko with a request to consider the issue of deferment from military service to seminarians and priests of military age.

“In August 2017 in response to the request of the Commissioner for religions and nationalities of the diocese of the Catholic Church in Belarus, has submitted the relevant information for granting a deferral to 2018 of the priests and the students of the higher theological educational institutions. However, in may 2018, the seminarians and priests of military age began to receive the agenda for compulsory military service”, – reports the website of the Roman Catholic Church of Belarus.

In this regard, and taking into account the insufficient number of local priests to work in parishes of the country and taking into account the fact that in the case of an appeal of students of the higher theological Seminary would not exist, the Conference of Catholic bishops addressed A. Lukashenka with a request to consider deferment.
