Publisher Epic Games has announced that it will be offering a prize pot of us $ 100 million (£74) for Fortnite competitions.
The prize fund has been set aside for the first year of the competition, play popular games, due to start later this year.
It is considered to be the largest sum of money offered for an e-sports tournament.
Epic made the announcement in a blog post.
He said: “Fortnite Competitors! Take your equipment, take home and start training. Since the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale, we have watched the passion for the community of the competition, to grow, and can’t wait to give you the means to battle with the best.
“In the season 2018-19, Epic Games will offer 100 million dollars to fund prize pools of Fortnite competitions. We’re behind the games competition in a big way, but our approach will be different, we intend to be more inclusive and focused on the pleasure of playing and watching the game.”
Fortnite is a survival shooter game that allows players to build structures out of materials they scavenge from the universe of the game.
No other details have been revealed at this stage, but the games industry experts believe that the ad is a smart marketing move by Epic.
“It is very impressive headline figure, but there is no detail on how the money will be divided, whether there will be a traditional tournament and a world champion player, or there are a lot of small tournaments.”, said Piers Harding-Rolls, director of games research at IHS Markit.
“China’s Tencent, Epic, have said that they intend to launch Fortnite in China, so, in effect, it is a very large marketing budget.
“The launch of the game a competitive e-sport market such as China means that it is less risky than the title suggests,” said Mr Harding-Rolls.
He added that the game has not yet been established as an e-sports game, so this would be a good way of trying to “impose itself as a major e-sports proposal”.
The E-sport is organised, competitive computer games, and can be staged in front of a live audience, and watched by millions of other people in line.
Fortnite first was launched in June of 2017. The format of the most popular is the Battle Royale mode, launched in September of this year, which is between 100 players against each other, some of which are small teams, to see who is the last person standing.
The game is free, but players can spend money on in-app purchases, including skins to customize the avatars of the players.
Depending on the games analytics firm Superdata, Fortnite $126 million in February of this year from in-game purchases.
