Are AI fairy tales in the future?

It has been recently reported that the meditation app Calm had published a “new” fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.

However, the Princess and The Fox has not been written by the brothers, who died 150 years ago, but by an artificial intelligence (AI) tool.

This is the first fairy tale written by an AI, says Quiet, and is the result of a collaboration with Botnik Studios – a community of writers, artists, and developers. Calm, says the technique could be referred to as “literary”cloning.

Botnik employees predictive text program to generate words and phrases that can be found in the original Grimm fairy tales. The human authors then form sentences of the form “the rough shape of a story”, according to Jamie Brew, chief executive officer of Botnik.

The full version is available to paying customers of Quiet, but here’s a short excerpt:

“Once upon a time, there was a golden horse with a golden saddle and a beautiful purple flower in her hair. The horse is a carrier of the flower to the village, where the princess danced for joy at the idea of looking so beautiful and good.

“This is beautiful! she said to her father, the king of bread and cheese. ‘Are you going to give him something to eat and drink if I eventually marry the prince?'”

It has not yet produce the most beautiful prose, but Botnik’s predictive keyboard is available for users to experiment with online. In addition to some phrases based on the classic fairy tales, it can also mimic the style of the Communist Manifesto, Buzzfeed quizzes, and recipes of pancakes.

So will artificial intelligence continue to generate new works from our favorite dead authors?”Not really a novelty

The Princess and the Fox may be the first IA-powered fairy tale, but the technique that produced it – the use of computers to generate content and then using humans to edit the content is quite widespread.

Mario Klingemann, artist-in-residence at Google Arts and Culture, said that even the Marxists keyboard “is not really a novelty.”

“This type of creative increase of the method has been used by artists and authors, even before the advent of computers,” he said.

He points out William S Burroughs, who popularized what is called the cut-up method of writing in the 1950s and 1960s: take a piece of text, cut it into pieces and rearrange in the form of a new composition.

“It combines the permutational power of the machine with still the undisputed human story-weaving and pattern-recognition skills,” Klingemann said. “At the same time, forces our brain to think outside the box that we tend to fall back.”Shelley I

There is no shortage of algorithms that are vying to be taken seriously as writers, and many other tools have been designed to work with humans on their output. Last year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab has developed Shelley a-I, named after Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.

The program of collaboration has been formed to the horror of the stories written by the users of Reddit. He then tweeted snippets of news stories in the approach of Halloween and turns with the man of Twitter users in writing the next few sentences.

More than 450 co-author of the stories were produced at the end of the project.

I attended the journalism, in the algorithms to unearth interesting data and write key, fact-based sentences about the results, is of more frequent occurrence, too. This machine-learning tools are increasingly used in the European newsrooms, although the focus is currently largely on the development of programs that can help journalists rather than replacing them.

“A different point of view’

The Princess and the Fox is the second viral’VE history of Botnik. Last winter, he has published a machine-generated by the chapter of Harry Potter fan fiction called Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked like a Big Pile of Ashes.

Luba Elliott, a curator specialising in artificial intelligence, said that the use of a machine can help to give the authors a different point of view on a story, but that humans are still deeply involved in the creation of these AI-generated stories.

“You can’t say,” This is a 200-year-old, has lost tale of the Brothers Grimm, and we just found out, ” she said.

“The one who creates an AI generated story chooses the data set, the model and the priests of the final output.

“There is still a strong involvement on the part of writers.”
