Hamilton to record Olivier haul

Hip-hop musical Hamilton could set a new record when he rocks up at the Olivier Awards on Sunday night.

It’s already going into the biggest night in the UK theatrical calendar, with a record of 13 nominations.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won nine awards last year, a new record for the most Olives ever received.

The most Olivier Awards received by a music to this day is seven, a record set by Matilda in 2012. Complete list of nominations

Two of Hamilton’s nominations are in the best actor in a musical category, which sees Giles Terera and Jamael Westman acknowledged.

The musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, fuses, rap and hip-hop to tell the story of the American founding father Alexander Hamilton, played by Jamael Westman, London.

Terera plays Hamilton’s nemesis Aaron Burr in the show, which opened in London last year after enjoying tremendous success in New York.

Three of the show’s Olivier nominations fall into the same category – best supporting actor in a musical, which means that the greatest number of prizes that he can actually win is 10.

Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, performed at the National Theatre has 10 nominations. There are two nods in the best actress in a musical, where Imelda Staunton and Janie Dee go head-to-head.

Four-time Olivier winner Staunton gets a new nomination in the category of best actress for her role in ” Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

His competition is Lesley Manville, for a Long Day of walking in the Night, Audra McDonald for Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, and Laura Donnelly for The Smuggler.

Jez Butterworth, The Smuggler has a handful of nominations, including for best new play in which she is in competition against the Ink, Networking, and Oslo.

Paddy Considine was nominated for the best actor of the Royal Court play, which has transferred to the Gielgud, alongside Bryan Cranston for the Network, Andrew Scott for Hamlet and Andrew Garfield for Angels in America.

Catherine Tate is the host of the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Sunday’s event will see David Lan receive a special award for his artistic direction of the Young Vic.
