Poroshenko welcomed the decision of NATO to give Ukraine the status of the country-graduate student

KYIV, Mar 10 — RIA Novosti. The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko welcomed the decision by NATO to grant Ukraine the status of the country-graduate student and thanked them for their support of Kiev.

Earlier on Saturday, the first Vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Iryna Gerashchenko said that NATO recognized Ukraine country status of a graduate student at the Alliance.

“I welcome the long-awaited and important logical NATO’s decision to increase the level of ambition of Ukraine on the Alliance! This was an acknowledgement of the real state of our relations with NATO… Grateful for the firm position of support to Ukraine, which is one of the key priorities of national security is to achieve the criteria for membership in the Alliance. Our next ambition — a Plan of action on membership for Ukraine”, — wrote Poroshenko on his page in Facebook.

Deputy Prime Minister for European integration of Ukraine Ivanna klympush-Tsintsadze said that NATO’s decision is important because with this decision, begin opportunities to further develop and deepen the cooperation between Ukraine and NATO. “This means that the Alliance has realized that Ukraine has changed its domestic legislation and has set itself a clear goal of NATO membership”, — said the Deputy Prime Minister on air of TV channel “112 Ukraine”.

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andrei Parubiy, in turn, noted the role of the decisions of the Parliament, which defined joining NATO objective of the foreign policy of Kiev. “Ukraine granted the status of a country aspirant for NATO membership! I am sincerely glad and proud that initiated me to the decision of the Verkhovna Rada on June 8, 2017 on membership of Ukraine in NATO as a strategic goal of Ukraine, was a key impetus. We step by step irreversibly go to our goal. Ukraine will be in NATO”, — wrote Parubiy on his page on Facebook.

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in December 2014, amended the two laws, abandoning non-aligned status of the state. In June 2016 were adopted additional changes that define membership in NATO objective of the foreign policy of the country. Ukraine also needs to 2020 to ensure full compatibility of its armed forces with those of NATO countries.
