Lady Bird ‘most overrated’ Oscars of the film by critics

Lady Bird is the film that has been most overrated by the critics of all of this year’s Oscar candidates, a study from the BBC has suggested.

The drama was stellar opinion of film critics, but the public were a little less generous.

The difference between the fan and the critical score is greater than any other 2018 Oscar-nominated film.

At the other end of the scale, The greatest Showman was the movie that the fans liked most of the criticism.

The study compared the ratings of Metacritic, which gives each film a score based on the critical reviews, the ones on IMDB, which allows viewers to publish their own assessments.

For Lady Bird, who is nominated for five Oscars including best film, Metacritic rates of 94 out of 100.

IMDB gave it 7.7 out of 10, based on 57,130 user ratings. Using the same scale as the critic score 7.7 becomes 77 – a difference of 17 points.

No other movie nominated for an Oscar this year has a big gap between the critical and the public opinion. So who is right?

“Well, it doesn’t matter what the critics say about a movie if it is not to make money,” says Emma Jones, film critic and editor-in-chief of Electra Media.

It is “not very surprising” that the Greta Gerwig of coming-of-age film is more loved by the critics, she adds.

“She has always been very independent, director of the film, with an incredibly dry sense of humor, which is not always to everyone’s taste. But it is very well to the critique of taste.”

Another film has been received as warmly by critics as Lady Bird – Christopher Nolan’s second World War, the blockbuster of Dunkirk also has a Metascore of 94. But the fans have favorite of Lady Bird overall, rating it 8.0 on IMDB.

But neither the public nor the critics ratings are everything. Box office takings are also a measure of a film’s popularity.

“All that one critic has said, or a fan that is said on these review sites is totally subjective,” Jones said.

During this time, The largest man of Show, the musical starring Hugh Jackman as PT Barnum, is just an Oscar for best original song.

It has a Metascore of 48, but the fans gave a score of 8.0 on IMDB more than Lady Bird.

However, Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig is not too worried about it being “overrated” by critics is not necessarily a bad thing for his chances of a best picture statuette on Sunday.

All in all, the best picture winners usually appeal more to the critics than the public.

Looking at all the Oscar nominees since 2000, the best picture winners have an average score gap of six points in favour of the critics.

All but three of the best film winners in the past 18 years have been preferred by critics.

The three, who has achieved a higher rating from the fans are Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind and Crash.
