The fitness tracker has caused concern at the Pentagon

Route map users GPS app supposedly allows you to detect military bases and trajectories of movement of military

The publication of the map of the world showing the routes of people involved in fitness, has caused concern at the Pentagon about security issues in connection with the possible disclosure of locations of foreign military bases and troops movements.

The developers of tracker Strava in November published the so-called “heat map” of user activity that shows the routes on which to walk, run and ride bikes millions of users of the application. On this map commonly used routes are highlighted with bright colors.

The company claims that the excluded classes, which users have marked as private, or in places that they did not want to publish.

The routes were tracked with GPS devices from manufacturers such as Fitbit, Garmin and Polar. Company Strava claims that even with the exceptions it reflects a billion map of the routes followed by users between 2015 and September 2017.

The Washington Post reported on a “heat map” and its implications, quoting a tweet by the Australian student Nathan Rusera who shared a link to the Strava website on Saturday.

“Looks very nice, but not very good from the point of view of operational safety. The American base you can clearly identify and mark them on the map,” wrote Rouser.

The map shows that most user activity is observed in the United States, Western Europe, Japan and Brazil. In Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan activity seen as bright spots on a dark background, including in many famous locations of American military bases or activity of the American military.

Devices that transmit data, can be used in different ways, for example, for short runs or track the number of steps that one goes through in a day. The result can be lines on the “heat map” in the form of loops around the perimeter of military installations, around which run users. They can also show the routes of movement of people on the site and give other information.

“The defense Department takes the issue very seriously and is assessing the situation to understand whether any additional training or advice, or to develop some additional policies to ensure the safety of personnel of the Ministry of defense within the country and abroad”, – said the representative of the Ministry of defense, major Trisha Harris.
