Amazon 2017 sales up by nearly a third

Online retail giant Amazon has seen its sales jump by nearly a third last year, and said that its Alexa digital assistant ” has “far exceeded expectations.

Revenue came in at $177.9 billion (£124.6 billion euros), an increase of 31%.

Net income or profit was $3 billion, compared to $2.4 billion in 2016.

The performance of the company in the last three months of the year has been driven by a surge in online shopping during the holiday season and the strong demand for its cloud services.

Sales for the fourth quarter increased 38% to $ 60.5 billion euros (£42.4 billion).

Fourth quarter net income of $ 1.9 billion of the $ 749m in the last three months of the year 2016.

The results of the fourth quarter include a tax benefit of approximately $789m related to the new u.s. tax law.

The company boss Jeff Bezos said projections for its Alexa assistant had been very optimistic, and the company had “significantly exceeded”.

“We don’t see positive surprises of this magnitude very often, expect us to double.”
