Patriarch Kirill – for the preservation of the special status of Jerusalem

Moscow. 14 Feb. INTERFAX – Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill called for the preservation of the special status of Jerusalem.

“I am convinced that the key to peace on earth biblical history lies in the normalization of relations between Palestine and Israel. Convinced that durable peace should be reached through negotiations, taking into account the legitimate interests of the parties, with the attention that needs to be preserved the special status of Jerusalem,” he said at a meeting with the leader of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday in Moscow.

Thus, according to the opinion of the Patriarch must be firmly guaranteed decent conditions for religious life.

The Primate noted that visiting the Holy Land more than half a million pilgrims annually, many of them come to Palestine, so the Church addressing issues related to achieving a lasting and just peace is very important.

From his part, Mahmoud Abbas noted that he expects to increase the number of Russian pilgrims.

“We do know that today the number of Russian pilgrims visiting the Holy places is about 500 thousand. We hope to increase their number in the continued development of our friendly relations,” he said.

“I would also like to acknowledge the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in establishing the pilgrimage to the sacred site and coordination by the Russian Orthodox Church carries out between the Russian pilgrims and Palestinian people,” he added.
