Toyota tips to 2019 Supra return with a new teaser image

Toyota has revealed a teaser image of a modern racing concept that will be unveiled at the Geneva motor show next month, and which they say will be the signal of its “commitment to bring its most iconic sports car to be back on the market”. That is thought to be a reference to a forthcoming new version of the Supra.

The image shows the silhouette of a large rear wing on the back of a highly sculpted sports car. Even though the release of the accompaniment, entitled “The Legend Returns’, makes no reference to the highly anticipated Above, the concept is likely to be a precursor of the reinvented sports car.

While the Supra, which was developed in collaboration with BMW Z4, has been spotted several times testing on the roads in camouflage, BMW has already revealed its Z4 concept, in view of a production reveal at the end of this year.

In the meantime, the new Supra is set to be revealed at the beginning of the next year, five years after the FT-1 concept was shown at the Detroit auto show.

The Above will be branded Gazoo, the name of the manufacturer of cars of Toyota’s racing arm, Gazoo Racing boss Saga Koei has confirmed to Autocar in January last year.

However, while the Z4 will be offered only as a convertible, the Supra will be available only as a coupe, a result understood to be an agreement between the two companies in order to differentiate the two models.

Recent images of Above tests also show the model using the BMW paintings, including a dashboard-mounted infotainment screen and accompanying with the knob controller on the central tunnel, such as the BMW heating control buttons and a BMW automatic gearlever.

The fifth generation of the model will be the first car to bear the legendary name since production of the previous model ceased in 2002.
