Italian doctor treating cancer with baking soda, sentenced to 5.5 years in prison

ROME, January 15 — RIA Novosti. The court of the Italian capital on Monday was sentenced to five years and six months in prison a former doctor, as a cure for cancer were offered treatment with soda, resulting in the death of the patient.

According to the newspaper la Repubblica, Tullio Simoncini was convicted in an illegal exercise of the profession and involuntary manslaughter. His partner, a radiologist Roberto Gandini, got two years probation.

Their victim six years ago it became 27-the summer inhabitant of Catania Luca, Olivotto, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor. In search of a cure, he turned to Simoncini and went to Tirana, where he practiced. “Miracle course” consisted in intravenous injections of solution of soda.

The young man’s death came two days after a heart attack caused by disturbance of acid-base balance, the newspaper writes. From the moment of diagnosis, Olivotto lived for four months.

“Today’s sentence put an end to a painful family history, Olivotto, giving hope that similar methods of treatment, dangerous and lacking scientific basis, will cease to appear and lead to new victims,” said family lawyers.
