Patriarch Kirill said the “unprecedented pressures” in order to discredit the sporting achievements of Russia

Moscow. 5 Feb. INTERFAX – Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill said on Sunday at the assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin a prayer for the athletes who will represent Russia in February at the Olympics in Pyeongchang.

“You all know what happened, not only with athletes from our country: an unprecedented force of organized pressure on international sports institutions with the aim to practically throw Russia out of the Olympic movement, to discredit her for many years, to cast doubt on the best achievements of our athletes”, – said the Patriarch gathered in the temple.

The Church Primate also expressed confidence that Russia will manage to overcome these difficulties.

“We know that the truth always prevails, even if the lie is globally organized, and we now have the confidence that after the decision of the Swiss court slandered athletes, outstanding representatives of our sport will be able to go to the Olympics to South Korea and to protect there honor of our country,” – said the Patriarch, expressing hope that this episode “will close any attempt to influence the sport in pursuit of specific political goals”.

“And the purpose are not athletes – the goal is to Russia”, – said Patriarch Kirill.

He urged Orthodox believers who came to the service to pray for the Homeland and those who will protect it – “fortunately not on the battlefield, and there, on the sports venues in order to finally bury all sorts of attempts to discredit and to isolate the country and our people because the country and people have the intention to live independently from instructions the powers that be”.
