“Putin’s list”: the reaction in the United States and Russia

While Washington does not impose sanctions against the defendants in the list

The administration of Donald trump published the long-awaited sanctions list of the Russians, by request of Congress on the punishment of Moscow for meddling in the election of 2016 in the United States. However, the administration decided at this point to refrain from the use against the defendants in the list of any sanctions.

Several representatives of the Kremlin reacted angrily to the publication of the list. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said that the move “will poison our contacts, our relations for quite a long time.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin reacted more cautiously, saying that Russia will not take retaliatory action.

Press Secretary of the President Dmitry Peskov, whose name appears in the list, said that Russia will study the report before determine the answer.

One of the leaders of the Russian opposition Alexei Navalny – welcomed the publication of the list, writing Tuesday in his Twitter: “Well, we are happy that their officially recognized by the crooks and thieves at the international level”.

Secretary of the democratic minority in the House of representatives Steni Hoyer condemned the administration’s decision not to take new sanctions and the lack of a “plan to deter further Russian aggression.”

“Sanctions are a deterrent only if countries believe that the United States will put them into action. Today’s bloodless statement, without any review by senior representatives of the administration, does not give me confidence in the fact that it is so,” the statement said Hoyer.

A member of the house of representatives Democrat Raja Krishnamurthy also criticized the White house’s decision: “Congress passed a bill on sanctions against Russia by an overwhelming majority to define its position regarding Russia’s interference in our democracy. Apparently, the President this position to denote not want it,” he wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, state Department spokesman Heather Nauert said that the measure is already hurting the Russian companies. “Today we informed Congress that this bill and its implementation are a deterrent against the Russian defense sector, the statement reads Neuert. – Since the adoption of the bill, according to our estimates, a number of foreign countries refused from planned or announced purchases of Russian defence products worth billions of dollars.”
