The state Department has welcomed a meeting between representatives of the DPRK and South Korea

WASHINGTON, 9 Jan — RIA Novosti, Alexei Bogdanovsky. The US state Department welcomed the meeting between representatives of the DPRK and South Korea and intends to work with Seoul over the fact that the participation of North Korean athletes in the Olympics do not conflict with international sanctions against Pyongyang, said Tuesday the spokesman Heather Nauert.

“The United States welcomes the meeting on 9 January between the Republic of Korea and North Korea aimed at ensuring peaceful, safe and successful winter Olympic games in Pyeongchang. The United States continues to consult closely with representatives of the Republic of Korea, which will ensure that North Korean participation in the winter Olympics did not violate the sanctions imposed by the UN security Council for illegal nuclear and missile program of North Korea”, — said Nauert.

According to her, U.S. Secretary Rex Tillerson is continuing consultations on this issue with his South Korean counterpart Kang Kyong Hwa.

On Tuesday in the village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea for the first time in 2015 held talks with senior officials — the Chairman of the Committee for the peaceful reunification of Korea Lee Dream Guana and the Minister of national unification of South Korea Cho Myung-Kyung.

The parties agreed on the participation of North Korean athletes in the Olympic games in South Korea’s Pyeongchang and agreed to intensify contacts and exchanges and cooperation in various fields, including the military, which were frozen due to the confrontation over the nuclear and missile programs of Pyongyang.
