The poverty level in Ukraine in 2017 dropped to 12%, – KIIS

The poverty level in Ukraine in 2017, according to the Kiev international Institute of sociology, has fallen to 12%. This was announced by Deputy Executive Director of KIIS Victoria walk-UPS, reports DT.UA.

According to her, from 1994 to 2017, the level of poverty in Ukraine has changed. The worst situation was in the late 1990-ies. In 1998, 52% of respondents believed that they were almost starving. Then the situation improved, and for 10 years – until 2008- the poverty rate dropped to 11%.

“And this is one of the few, but important achievements of Ukraine over the years – said the sociologist. In 2008 after the outbreak of the global crisis, the level of poverty increased to 21%, but then the situation began to improve. Before the military conflict, in 2013, the poverty level was 9%, from 2014 to 2016 an increase of nearly doubled to 17%. But in the last years the situation has improved and poverty has fallen to 12%”.

Note, from 1 January 2018, the minimum wage is 3 723 UAH.
