If you think that the instant availability of all music, all the time has killed the compilation… you’re completely wrong.
Apple has just revealed his biggest album of the year, and the Top 10 includes four entries for Now this is What I call Music! of the series.
Now 95 is the most popular of the collection, the third place at the year-end chart.
Now, 96, Now 97, and Now That is What I call the Christmas countdown.
The list combines figures from Apple for the streaming service, Apple Music, and download on the iTunes store.
Only Ed Sheeran is Split and Rag N Bone Man Man overcame Now 95, who has hits like Drake is One of the Dance and Clean Bandit’s Rockabye.
Chart expert Fraser McAlpine believes the key to the series’ success lies in its simplicity.
Compilation are easy to digest, sure guides for a constantly evolving pop landscape,” he told the BBC.
“In the course of the years, each new edition has become a time capsule, charting the changes in the nation’s favourite songs, as a half-yearly report.
“So this year, we have seen a massive increase in Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa title, while Justin Bieber shares remain buoyant.”‘Carefully curated’
Now the series first began in 1983, when the first edition included Bonnie Tyler Total Eclipse of the Heart UB40-Red Red Wine.
Even if the compilation had existed before, which usually consisted of the market cover, or songs from a specific label.
The Time of the series’ master stroke was to mediate an agreement whereby the two companies, Virgin and EMI, and has worked for the ladder.
The first album has spent five weeks at number one and has spawned an imitator, called Hits – from rival label Sony BMG and Warner Music.
Since 1989, the commercial importance of these compilations was so strong that a separate chart was launched to prevent them clogging up the Top 40.
These days, the Time the anthologies continue to sell in mass.
Now, 95, released last November, was the largest in the UNITED kingdom the album of 2016, surpassing even Adele 25.
The series exists also streaming services such as Spotify and Google Play, where the playlist of the albums’ tracklistings are hundreds of thousands of followers.
Fraser McApline notes that libraries are “more carefully curated than it may seem”.
“Besides, note the’, inevitably, the big hit of the moment, there are always one or two forgotten gems that deserve a further study in depth, with the benefit of hindsight.”
Peter Duckworth, director of the Music brand, said the success of the series showed “the role of curation” had become “ever more precious”.
“This graph shows how important it is to a long, trusted and loved brand as it Now is in giving people the confidence to trust the curation,” she told the BBC.
Outside of the Time series, Ed Sheeran dominated by Apple’s year-end charts with the Form Of You, the Castle on the Hill and Galway Girl, making the Top 10 tracks of the year.
“Really glad everyone liked the album of this year, thanks to everyone who streamed and downloaded,” said the star after hearing that Divide had become the year’s biggest album.
