TOKYO, Nov 24 — RIA Novosti. Japanese police discovered a North Korean fishing boat with 8 sailors on Board, they all expressed a desire to return home.
According to the Agency Kyodo, the call came to police from a resident in yurihonjo city in Akita Prefecture in Northwest Japan on Thursday at 23.30 local time (17.30 GMT), after the door of his house knocked on one of North Korean fishermen. Arrived at the scene, law enforcement officers detained eight North Korean citizens, and on the shore had discovered a fishing boat with a catch of squid.
During interrogation it was found out that the fishermen left the North Korean port about a month ago, but due to engine failure lost control of the boat. All detainees have expressed a desire to return to the DPRK.
As stated at a press conference on Friday, the Secretary-General of the Japanese government, Yoshihide Suga, the Japanese government will “take appropriate steps” to address the issue of the return of the fishermen home.
The DPRK and Japan have no diplomatic relations with each other. Due to the ongoing nuclear and missile tests by Pyongyang, Tokyo is in favour of strengthening international and bilateral sanctions and pressure on North Korea.
