Paradise Papers: Tillerson found offshore past

U.S. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson headed at one time an offshore company incorporated in Bermuda. This is stated in the materials posted on its website on Sunday, the international consortium of journalistic investigations (ICIJ).

The documents indicated that Tillerson prior to his appointment as Secretary of state over 10 years was the head of oil giant ExxonMobil. He was also the Director of the Marib Upstream Services company, which was established in Bermuda in 1997 for the implementation of activities related to the development of oil and gas in the area of the deposits near the town of Marib in Yemen, according to the documents.

“He was a member of the Board of Directors of the company from 1997 to 1998, when he was President of a branch of Exxon – Exxon Yemen,” said the consortium.

According to the organization, Marib Upstream Services was a joint venture of three companies – Yemen Gas, which belonged to the state, Yemen Exploration & Production, which is owned by corporations ExxonMobil and Hunt Oil, as well as Yemen LNG, among the major shareholders of which were the French oil company Total.

Marib Upstream Services acted on the basis of agreements on share distribution between the government of Yemen and the oil corporations – that is, was, in fact, an offshore company. It continued to exist, and only in 2015 Appleby had ceased to provide her services, as evidenced by the documents of this company.

“Tillerson did not respond to a request to comment on this information”, – stated in the organization.
