Twitter plans to increase the number of characters in the tweets of 140 to 280 for the majority of users.
The new limit will not apply to tweets written in Japanese, Chinese and Korean that can transmit more information in a single character.
The change is the result of a trial between a small group of users who began in September in response to the criticism that it has not been easy enough to tweet.
The change is part of Twitter’s plan to attract new users and increase growth. Twitter brevity
During the test, only 5% of tweets sent were longer than 140 characters and only 2% of more than 190, the social media site said in a blog post.
But those who have had recourse to the more tweets, got more followers, more engagement and spent more time on the site, he added.
“During the first few days of the event, many people tweeted the full 280 limit because it was new and novel, but a short time after the behavior standard,” wrote Aliza Rosen, a Twitter product manager.
“We found that when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they have tweeted more easily and more often. But mostly, people tweeted below 140 most of the time, and the brevity of Twitter is stayed.”
According to Twitter, 9% of tweets in English hit the limit on the number of characters.
“This reflects the challenge of fitting a thought into a tweet, which often leads to much time spent editing and sometimes even the abandonment of tweets before you send it,” Ms. Rosen said.
The increase of the character limit should not affect the experience of the people on the site, she added.
“We – and many of you have been concerned that the schedule may fill up with 280-character tweets, and the people with the new limit always use all of the space. But this will not happen.”
When the change was announced, a lot of criticism, showing the changes they would rather see it as a crackdown on hate crimes and the robots, and the introduction of a time line and editing function.
The site currently has 330 million active users. This compares with $ 800 million for Instagram and more than 2 billion users of Facebook.
