UN: one quarter of the world’s refugees come from Syria and Iraq

UN, Nov 2 — RIA Novosti. A quarter of the world’s refugees come from Syria and Iraq, said on Thursday the UN high Commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi.

“The number of people who have become immigrants against their will, coming to 66 million,” said Grande at the meeting of the UN Security Council on the refugee issue.

He noted that in 2009 the figure was 42 million people.

“The catastrophic conflict in Syria has forced 11 million people to leave their homes. The share of Syria and Iraq now accounts for a quarter of all forcibly displaced people in the world,” said UN high Commissioner.Migrants in Europe: how and where to sail
